Why is 8 Mile Rd. called 8 Mile? Because it’s 8 miles from the exact original center of Detroit in Campus Martius.
What is the origin of Campus Martius? It comes from the Latin term “Field of Mars,” who was the God of War. It was named that because 90,000 Michigan soldiers trained at the site before serving the Union Army in the Civil War. The tours are offered in all major cities in the world. The Detroit tours are offered every Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. The tour costs $55 a person.
