Understand Detroit: Past, Present and Future

Understand Detroit: Past, Present and Future will be a concentrated one-day experience that provides participants with “12 Hours in the D.” The Detroit Orientation Institute (DOI) is partnering with Inside Detroit, a nonprofit organization with a track record of showcasing the city’s assets, to offer an accessible, convenient and affordable one-day program.
Highlights of the new program will be the opening session at the Fort Shelby Hotel, viewing of the new DOI film Regional Roots: The Birth and Evolution of Detroit and Its People, and a reception at Cliff Bell’s.
Bus/Walking Tours of Downtown, southwest Detroit, Midtown, New Center and the near East Side.
Also included in the package:
- Demographic presentation by Kurt Metzger, director of Data Driven Detroit (D3)
- Panel discussions led by WDET-FM’s Craig Fahle, “Collaboration Efforts in the D” and “Where Are We Going as a Region?”
- Meet and discuss issues with representatives from foundation, government, development, churches, public safety, arts/culture, business education and media
Program registration forms and a sample agenda are available at www.doi.wayne.edu.
Tuition: $200 per person (must register by March 22), $250 per person (March 23 – April 8). Tuition includes transportation to program sites, meals and background materials. You may register on-line, by phone or FAX; however, full payment should be received by April 8, 2010 to secure a place.
Cancellation Policy: Tuition, less a $25 processing fee, will be refunded if you cancel by April 1st. If you must cancel after the deadline, we will apply your tuition to the Fall 2010 Institute program with a re-registration fee.

Thousands of people will be coming down to Corktown to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, and we want to help you stay ahead of the crowds by showing you where to go once you get there. We’ll be taking you inside of some of Corktown’s best bars along the parade route. Throughout the night you’ll hob nob with owners and staff, get drink specials and find your inner Irish. It’s the Highlights tour on steroids! We’ll give a brief introduction on how to ride a Segway then head out on the town. This 2-hour tour includes some great straightaways like Cadillac Square and the riverfront where you can cut loose and take your Segway up to 12 mph. Plus, you’ll learn about the city at the same time.
There are only 6 spaces per tour so buy your ticket today! Private tours can be scheduled for groups up to 6 for $480. Rain Policy: Tours will go forward in light rain. If there’s heavy rain Saturday at 10:00am we’ll postpone to 3:00pm. Heavy rain at 3:00 will cause reschedule for another day. Monday tour postpones to Wednesday of the same week. We’ll call you if we’re postponing or rescheduling. No refunds unless weather-related. $75/person. Please review the Liability Release for physical requirements, terms and conditions.
